The mirror of the heart

Enlightenment, Purity, Awareness, Consciousness, call it what you like, might swoop down on you flashingly, but that swoop is only the final stage of a process. So if it takes you 30 or 30,000 years, you still must pass the grades before you get struck down. The lapse of time—if you perceive of such a thing as time, from one grade to the other, is up to you. But there ain’t no skipping grades.
From the existence of an embryo that by blood is nourished,
you must be born into an infant that’s sustained by milk,
grow into a child that eats solids
to become an adult who tastes all—liquid and solid and in between,
evolving thus (since it’s the path of excess that leads to the tower of wisdom)
into a seeker after wisdom
and to a child again if you discover it
(for only when the mirror of the heart is clear you can discern the ugly from the beautiful),
then all of a sudden, finally,
to a hunter of invisible game.
